Health and Safety Policy — Skip Hire Regents Park
Skip Hire Regents Park is committed to delivering safe, reliable waste removal and skip hire services across our service area. This policy outlines the principles and practical measures we apply to protect employees, contractors, customers and the public from harm arising from our operations. It sets expectations for safe working, compliance with applicable safety standards and continuous improvement of our rubbish handling and waste collection practices.
Policy Purpose and Scope
Our objective is to prevent accidents, occupational ill health and environmental damage connected to our skip hire, rubbish collection and waste transfer activities. This policy applies to all staff, drivers, subcontractors and visitors involved in the provision of skip hire services, including deliveries, site loading, on-site placement and vehicle operations. The policy covers normal operations, routine maintenance and foreseeable emergency scenarios.
To implement this policy we commit to: identifying hazards, assessing risks and applying controls; providing information, instruction, training and supervision; and maintaining safe vehicles, equipment and work systems. Key responsibilities are set out below and are supported by procedural documents such as risk assessments, vehicle maintenance records and training logs.
Responsibilities
Management will ensure adequate resources are made available to meet safety objectives and will review performance regularly. Line managers and supervisors must enforce safe systems of work, ensure staff competence and respond promptly to safety concerns. Employees are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety, cooperate with safety arrangements and report hazards or incidents without delay.
Controls and safe working practices include, but are not limited to:
- Vehicle safety: daily vehicle checks, tachograph and load security compliance;
- Site safety: safe placement of skips, exclusion zones and clear access for emergency services;
- PPE and manual handling: mandatory use of appropriate personal protective equipment and training for manual handling tasks;
- Hazardous waste: segregation, labeling and secure containment in line with legal waste classification;
- Traffic management: measures to control vehicle movement during deliveries and collections.
Operational Controls and Safe Systems
Our operational controls are designed for consistent application across all projects and stops. Drivers and crews must follow established loading procedures to ensure skips are filled safely and not overloaded. Access to private sites must only be permitted where safe conditions exist and where there is reasonable assurance that the ground, overhead clearances and traffic conditions enable safe operations. We use documented checklists to standardise inspections and to support accountability.Training, Competence and Communication
All personnel involved in skip hire, rubbish removal and waste handling receive documented induction training and job-specific instruction. Refresher training occurs regularly and whenever changes to processes, equipment or legislation occur. Communication channels for safety include toolbox talks, pre-start briefings and incident debriefs. We encourage an open reporting culture where near-misses and hazards are reported without blame to enable learning.Incident reporting and investigation procedures are in place to ensure prompt action, root cause analysis and corrective measures. Emergency response plans are maintained for vehicle incidents, spill response and first aid. Regular drills and reviews help ensure readiness and continuous improvement.
Contractor and subcontractor management is enforced through pre-qualification, documented safety requirements and supervision. Contractors engaged in waste and skip-related activities must meet our safety standards and provide evidence of competence and insurance. Where contractors carry out work on customer sites, our teams will verify permits, site rules and any site-specific hazards before starting work.
Environmental protection is integral to our safety approach. Proper segregation, minimisation of contamination, spill prevention and correct disposal routes for hazardous materials reduce risk to human health and the environment. We promote recycling and reuse as part of sustainable waste management and ensure waste carriers and transfer stations used meet regulatory standards.
Monitoring, audit and review ensure the policy remains effective. Performance indicators include incident frequency, near-miss reporting rates, training completion and vehicle inspection compliance. Management will review this policy annually or following a significant incident or legislative change to ensure relevance and to drive continuous enhancement.
Policy enforcement is mandatory. Failure to comply with safety procedures may result in disciplinary action or suspension of site access. Equally, positive safety behaviours are recognised and promoted throughout the organisation. All personnel have a duty to contribute to a safe workplace.
Commitment: Skip hire teams will maintain high standards of competence, supervision and accountability to protect people and property while providing efficient rubbish clearance and skip hire solutions. We will apply reasonable and proportionate controls tailored to each task to minimise risks.
Signed on behalf of the management team: Skip Hire Regents Park. This Health and Safety Policy should be read alongside operational procedures, risk assessments, and training records which together form the basis for managing health, safety and environmental risks associated with our skip hire and waste removal services.
